7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Marketing Agency

Does marketing keep getting pushed to the bottom of you to-do list? A lot of businesses face this when busy doing the work that pays the bills. If you’re at that point and looking for a partner to help you continue to grow your client base and your revenue— it might be time to consider hiring a marketing agency.

However, not all marketing agencies are created equal. Before you invest your capital and time in a marketing agency, there are a few questions to consider.

Do they understand your unique market?

Is your brand a tech startup? A family-owned restaurant? Or an insurance company that’s been around for 100 years? Whatever industry you’re in or type of business you’re running, the marketing agency you partner with should have experience in your arena.

Check out their track record —do they have client success stories for brands similar to yours? Most will have the clients they’ve worked with listed on their website. Find out if they have long-term clients that can share their experience with you.

Are they clear on your goals?

If you’ve had initial discussions with a prospective marketing agency, did they ask questions about what your goals were? Depending on whether you’re a new business or a well-established one, your goals will be different and a marketing agency who makes your company’s objectives top priority will take the time to learn about what you want to accomplish and lay out a plan to get you there.

If they seem to be only pushing their agenda instead, it’s best to keep looking.

Do they “practice what they preach”?

This old adage can help determine whether they’ll deliver what they promise. Browse their website and scope out how they present themselves on social media. Is what they suggest for you reflected in their business as well? When a marketing agency sells an idea, it should be one they’re willing to implement in their own business.

Does their area of expertise match what you need?

If you need website design and they’ve only ever created brochures, you may need to consider a firm that’s more experienced in the services you need. It’s unlikely an agency will be the best at everything. Most have a specific type of marketing that they specialize in such as content, digital, SEO, design or video production. When anyone claims they can “do it all” —proceed with caution.

Are they transparent with information?

This is your business and therefore, it’s your data they are collecting. How many social media shares did the last blog post get? What’s the bounce rate on the website they designed? What were the results of the split test they did on email subject lines? How many conversions were there from the whitepaper that was downloaded?  With all the data at our fingertips these days, marketing is no longer about a feeling or opinion; it’s based on facts and figures that can be tracked.

Before you hire a marketing agency, confirm that you’ll get progress reports along the way. Agencies thrive on metrics too as they further improve and zero in on what’s most effective in each situation.

Do they communicate well and regularly?

If your main point of contact didn’t show up to those initial meetings, or you haven’t heard from them in a while, that could be a sign of trouble ahead. A marketing organization that is going to help you achieve the results you’re after, will show up for you and check in to update you regularly on the status of a campaign. They will be professional in the way they request feedback and consistent in supplying information to you.

Do they back up their claims?

Anybody can say they’re good at something, but a reputable marketing agency will back it up with proof. Look at testimonials from other clients they’ve worked with or speak to those clients yourself. Also, consider how they talk about their competition. If they have to disparage them in an attempt to win your business, rather than simply relying on their own successes, it’s probably best to look elsewhere.
