Giving Thanks

Soon enough, many of us will be sitting around the table, stuffed to the gills with tryptophan and pumpkin pie, basking in the Thanksgiving holiday. Traditionally, this time of year is a time to give thanks. Some, however, don’t believe they give thanks enough. A study conducted by the John Templeton Foundation found that while 90 percent of us are grateful for family, only 40-50 percent of us express that gratitude on a regular basis. That percentage drops when you bring people into the workplace. The study found that nearly 3 out of 4 people never or rarely express gratitude to their boss, even though they found the majority of people felt better and perform better if more thanks were given around the office.

So in that spirit, we want to encourage people to give more thanks this year. Tell your boss you’re grateful for their leadership. Make sure your cubical mate knows how grateful you are for all the work they do for you. Spread thanks all around the office, and reap the benefits of a happy and more cohesive workplace.

Your parents would love to hear how thankful you are for them. You could tell your kids, but we all know that’s an exercise in futility. Just kidding, they probably won’t look up from their mobile device. Either way, giving thanks is a great way to make you and those around you feel better, and we don’t think there’s anything wrong with that!
