Social Media Trends to Watch in 2017

The New Year is here, and the world of social media is changing faster than ever. We saw a lot of interesting things in 2016, from Snapchat launching sunglasses, Facebook continuing to dominate, a whole host of viral content, and some of the most entertaining social media “challenges” we’ve ever seen. With 2016 in the books, it’s time to look forward to another exciting year of social media. What’s in store? Read on to learn about a few things we have our eye on:

Live Video

Video has revolutionized social media marketing, giving a space for engaging stories to be shared and creative marketing efforts to be unleashed. Between YouTube and Facebook, the two platforms see more than 12 billion daily views, so it’s obvious that live video is important. With the public launch of Facebook Live in April, followed by similar features from Instagram and Twitter, live video has become a powerful tool for engagement for brands and businesses. Being able to stream your content and interact with your fans on a global level is truly powerful for marketers. For 2017, step up your video capabilities, live stream that event you’re holding, hold a live Q&A with your fans or make your next product launch live on Facebook and reap the rewards of live video.

Snapchat

One of the most interesting and engaging social media platforms to date, Snapchat has remained a challenging arena for most businesses to break into. It’s more difficult for your fans to find you, your content is gone after 24 hours and many just don’t understand how to navigate the platform.

For big brands, one of the best ways to utilize Snapchat is the use of lenses, those funny picture overlays consumers love to send back and forth. Branded lenses are great for big businesses, as Taco Bell’s Cinco De Mayo lens was seen by 224 million people. This option is definitely at the high end of Snapchat’s advertising costs, but there are a variety of advertising options for small- and medium-sized businesses who want to take advantage of the fastest growing social media platform out there. Something as simple as a geofilter with your brand can be had for as little as $5, depending on your location and timeline. These filters are a simple and cost-effective way for your company to expand your reach at an event, and get your foot in the door on the platform.

Social Media Advertising

When it comes to paid advertising, it’s becoming more evident with each passing day that social media is the most cost-effective and efficient way to reach the people that matter most to your business. Companies increased social media marketing spending from $17.7 billion in 2014 to $23.6 billion in 2015, and will continue to trend upward each year. Platforms are becoming more sophisticated, allowing for more advanced targeting and advertising options, making it an ideal place to put your message in front of exactly the right people. While simply boosting a post to more people can be an effective strategy, more advanced tactics, such as using tracking pixels or custom audiences allow businesses to learn more about the people who view their posts and advertisements, and serve them content that has a greater chance of connecting with them. As 2017 rolls on, more and more businesses are going to realize they get the biggest bang for their advertising buck when they advertise on social media.
